The Changing Face of Forestry

Your work in the woods is demanding. From operating heavy-duty forestry equipment to understanding the terrain you’re working on, you and your crew get it done.

However, forestry production is changing. Advanced machine technology, greater visibility into equipment performance, evolving land-management practices, and pressure to accomplish more with available labor are reshaping the industry.

Adapting doesn’t have to mean replacing proven methods. Keep what’s working well, but boost overall productivity with equipment and technology that provide better information, greater control, and more efficient ways to move timber.

Forestry Equipment Is Now More Specialized

Effective logging requires equipment to be properly matched to the terrain, timber, extraction method, and your production objectives. Today’s forestry fleets deliver specialized options for every step of the process.

John Deere feller bunchers are designed to cut and gather timber efficiently, with tracked and wheeled configurations available for different operating conditions. Terrain, power, boom reach, torque, and tractive effort all factor into choosing the right machine.

Once trees are felled, extraction equipment has to keep pace. John Deere skidders provide cable and grapple configurations for moving timber through demanding conditions, while forwarders carry logs off the ground at varying load capacities aligned to production requirements.

You can also use harvesters, knuckleboom loaders, swing machines, and other forestry equipment to build a system around the specific way material moves through a jobsite.

The Connected Machine Streamlines Fleet Operations

One of the biggest changes in forestry is happening beyond the cutting head or grapple.

Modern equipment can provide you and your crew with far more information about machine health and utilization than previous models. John Deere Precision Technology includes tools such as JDLink™ telematics, Dealer Machine Monitoring, Expert Alerts, and remote diagnostics and programming.

That connectivity is changing how maintenance decisions are made. Instead of waiting for you or your operators to notice a developing problem, connected equipment provides earlier visibility into machine conditions. Remote diagnostic capabilities can also help dealers understand certain equipment issues before a technician reaches your machine.

When working in remote locations, that increased visibility matters. An unexpected failure deep in the woods affects more than one machine. It can interrupt production farther up or down the logging system.

Land Management is Broadening the Industry

The definition of “forestry work” is starting to encompass more than traditional timber harvesting. If your job description now involves vegetation management, right-of-way clearing, site preparation, fire mitigation, habitat improvement, and other land-management duties, consider Papé Machinery’s full line of FAE forestry and land-clearing equipment.

The FAE UMM/DT forestry mulcher is a great example; it’s built for heavy land-clearing applications and can process material up to 12 inches in diameter.

Biomass is another piece of the changing forestry landscape. Papé offers Morbark forestry and biomass equipment for processing whole trees, branches, brush, and other material into usable or more manageable products.

Operators Remain at the Center of the Operation

Technology can help operators make better-informed decisions, but it doesn’t replace knowledge of timber, terrain, machine behavior, or safe operating practices. Instead, the most effective technology supports the experience already inside the cab.

Features that improve machine visibility, hydraulic control, monitoring, diagnostics, and operator comfort can help you and your experienced team work more consistently – while giving newer operators additional tools for understanding machine performance.

That relationship between skilled people and increasingly capable equipment will continue to define the next generation of forestry.

Build a Forestry Fleet for What Comes Next

The changing face of forestry is about more than adding technology. It’s about creating an operation that can respond to changing applications, demanding production goals, labor challenges, and increasingly sophisticated fleet management.
