3 BIG MISTAKES TO AVOID IN CONSTRUCTION BIDS

You’d be surprised how many mistakes there can be on construction estimates. Everything from using the wrong wage rates for labor, improper material pricing, a failure to visit the project site, and the like… you name it, we’ve seen it. At Papé Machinery Construction & Forestry we want to see you and your construction business succeed, so we’ve outlined three of the major errors on bids. By avoiding these three big mistakes, you’ll see the profit you deserve by getting the bids you want and maintaining your bottom line.
1. Not Taking Your Equipment Needs into Account

Whether your equipment is old or the specialized equipment you’ll need comes from a rental fleet, you need to take into consideration the capabilities of your own fleet and what is needed for the job. Think through what your equipment needs will be for the entire scope of the project and contact your local equipment dealer to price out what it will cost to fill the gaps in your fleet. It’s an investment you’ll have to factor into your long term business expenses and ultimately your bid. Using construction equipment rentals instead or in addition to your current fleet will impact the construction costs for the job and can be directly built into your bid.
2. Not Utilizing the Right Technology

When it comes to construction management, it’s easy to eliminate the guesswork with the right tools. Once your construction estimate has been accepted and you’re hard at work, implementing the right technologies – like John Deere WorkSight – that let you optimize uptime, track time spent idling, engine load, and fuel consumption. Investing in telematics technology pays for itself because with the data it provides, you’re able to remove any of the cost pain points from the fleet.
3. Not Triple-Checking Measurements

If you’re not triple-checking measurements for your supplies from the beginning of the project, the efficiency, power, and capability of your machines won’t matter. Don’t let poor measurements detract from your hard-working construction equipment. Stay true to your construction estimate, bottom line, and always triple-check your supply measurements ahead of time.
